Breathing New Life Into the Past: How We Use and Restore Antiques in Our Designs

At b. Blanton design, we love pieces with a story.

There’s something special about antiques that brand-new furniture just can’t replicate. Maybe it’s the craftsmanship, maybe it’s the patina, or maybe it’s knowing that a piece has been part of someone’s life for decades—or even generations.

We use antiques in our projects often. They add soul, texture, and a sense of history to a home. But we don’t just drop them in and call it a day—we thoughtfully restore, reimagine, and style them so they feel right at home in each space.

Why We Gravitate Toward Antiques

Antiques bring warmth and character. Whether it's a vintage mirror, a family chest, or an old farmhouse table, these pieces instantly make a room feel more personal.

They also help us create balance. In a modern kitchen, a rustic antique hutch can soften clean lines. In a more traditional living room, a quirky vintage chair might bring a bit of surprise. We love finding that mix.

And on a practical level, reusing older pieces is a sustainable design choice. We’re all about breathing new life into things that still have so much to give.

The Restoration Process

We work with trusted local craftspeople—woodworkers, upholsterers, and finishers—who help us bring antiques back to life.

Sometimes it’s a simple touch-up: tightening a drawer, polishing hardware, or cleaning up finish. Other times, it’s a full transformation: stripping layers of paint, reupholstering in fresh fabric, or repurposing an old piece into something completely new. (We once turned a vintage sideboard into a bathroom vanity—and it looked amazing.)

We never try to make an antique look brand new. The goal is always to let the charm and character shine through, while making sure the piece works for your home and lifestyle.

Personal Pieces Make a House a Home

Some of our favorite projects are the ones where clients bring in family pieces—an inherited chair, grandma’s dining table, or something they found on a trip and held onto for years. These kinds of pieces are deeply personal, and we love finding ways to make them feel fresh and meaningful in a new space.

We also spend time hunting for antiques that feel right for each project. Whether it’s a European flea market or a local antique shop, we’re always on the lookout for those one-of-a-kind finds that make a space feel layered and lived in.

It’s About More Than Looks

At the end of the day, it’s not just about beauty. Antiques make a home feel real. They help tell your story. And they bring that extra bit of magic that makes a space feel not just designed—but loved.

If you’ve got an old piece you’re holding onto (even if it’s tucked away in the attic), we’d love to help you find a way to use it. It might just become your new favorite thing in the house.
